Khobi Monastery complex, or officially, Nojikhevi Convent of the Dormition, is located in the village Nojikhevi, 4 km from town Khobi, Samegrelo. Khobi Monastery represents a unique medieval Georgian historical-architectural monument, closely related to the house of Dadiani, noble family of historical Samegrelo (Mingrelia) Kingdom.
The historical parts of Khobi Monastery integrates the following structures: Dormition church, ruins of a palace, free standing bell tower and fence around.
Dormition church is estimated to be built in the 13th-14th c.c. Church has a quite unusual architectural style. It is so called “a hall type” church with groin vaults, and does not have a dome. Interior walls of the church are covered by murals; however, the frescoes have been significantly damaged through centuries. Frescoes are dated to different historical periods – to the 13th, 14th and 17th centuries, and depict religious themes, as well as members of Dadiani family. Façades of the church are decorated with stone carvings. There are wall inscriptions telling the stories of the construction of the church.
Church is surrounded by a fence that has been restored in the 1970s.
Bell tower of Khobi Monastery located near the church, and has one of the largest belfries in Georgia. It is a domed structure with seven windows. Tower is dated to the 14th-17th c.c.
Another highlight of Khobi Monastery with historical and architectural significance is the ruins of the medieval Episcopal Palace. Palace is estimated to be built in the 17th century. This two-storey building has a rectangular plan, and was built with rough, white stones.
