The famous Georgian Military Road runs through the gorge. “Dariali” in Persian means “Gate of the Alans”. The length of the gorge is 11 kilometers.
Dariali Gorge was one of the only two crossings of the Greater Caucasus Mountain range. Therefore, it is clear how important this gorge was for a long period in history. The place has been fortified since the second century BC. Another crossing pass was Derbent Pass.
