The St. Stephanoz nunnery and a small chapel were founded by the Armenians emigrated from Iran, in the 18th century. In the 19th century a domed church was constructed in its place and it was renovated in the beginning of the 20th century. The church has been under the ownership of the Georgian Orthodox Church since 1988. An “inscribed cross” type building is constructed on the brick citadel. The church is constructed of brown brick. The painting of the interior was carried out by the artists D. Khidasheli and M. Chakvetadze.
