Pitareti

Pitareti Monastery is a beautiful piece of medieval Georgian church architecture. Pitareti is located in the gorge of river Ktsia (Khrami is another name of the river), in about 100 km from the capital Tbilisi and 12 km from town Tetritskaro.

Pitareti Monastery was built in 1213-1222, during the reign of King Lasha Giorgi. Monastery used to be the property and burial ground for Kachibadze and Baratashvili noble family. Pitareti has been renovated several times during the medieval period.

Complex consists of a church, surrounding wall, belfry, and other buildings, including winery. Church was constructed in the early 13th century, and has a cross-in-square design. The outer wall surrounding the monastery is covered in exquisitely carved stone ornamentation. Interior has frescoes, but has been significantly damaged.

Pitareti compex sits between the beautiful hills and forests of Kartli province. Sophisticated and defined angles make Pitareti Monastery to stand out among the hills more so than other historical monuments, creating an elegant and picturesque scene.
