Gergeti Trinity Church
Gergeti Trinity is the only cross-cupola church in mountainous Khevi province, East Georgia. Church is located on Mount Gergeti, at an altitude of 2170 meters, under the Kazbegi Glacier, overlooking the town Stepantsminda, administrative center of the province. Church was built in the 14th century. For centuries, because of its remote location, Gergeti was often used for hiding precious relics from Mtskheta during the invasions and wars.
The church itself was built in the 14th century. Church has a cross-dome design. Separate two-storey bell tower, which stands next to the church dates back to the second half of the 14th century. Gergeti Church has a surrounding wall that is more modern, but is thought to be built on the basis of the older wall.
Gergeti Trinity Church can be reached by car or on foot from Stepantsminda.
