Abasha
Abasha is a town located in Samegrelo region, at 23 meters above sea level. Population: 4,941 (2014). It has the status of the town since 1964. The word “Abasha” has an Arabic origin. The legend says that when Arabs wanted to cross the river, they noticed the level of the water was high, so they started shouting “Aba-sha,” which translates as “retreat.”
One of the most prominent Georgian writer, Konstantine Gamsakhurdia was born in Abasha. One will find his house-museum in the town.
Village Sujuni is located in 6 kilometers from Abasha. The Church of St. George built in the 18th century, and a synagogue built in the 19th century can be visited here.
The visitors have a chance to see a wood carving workshop in the nearby village Zanati. The workshop produces wood carved icons and crosses and organizes woodcarving master classes as well.
