Keda Town Upper Adjara
Keda is a small town in Adjara region. It is situated on the banks of the river Acharistskali, at an elevation of 256 meters above sea level. It received the status of a small city in 1966. The population is 1510 (as of the year 2014).
Keda and its surrounding area is rich with historical monuments, especially fortresses:
Tsivasula Fortress is located on the east part of Sasire hill. The fortress used to have strategic importance. Tsivasula Fortress was built in the 16th-17th centuries. Nowadays it is destroyed.
Gulebi Fortress was constructed in the 12th-13th centuries. It is standing on mount Satsumpia, near the village Gulebi.
Saghoreti Fortress, nowadays in ruins, was built on the rocky hill, on the right bank of the river Acharistskali.
Kaviani Fortress is situated on the Kaviani Range. The fortification is divided into two parts.
It is not known exactly when Zendidi Fortress was founded. Zendidi used to be an important fortification in the 7th-9th centuries when there was a Batumi-Artanuji trade route going through Keda.
Besides the fortresses there are several interesting (and some of them medieval) bridges in Keda:
Dandalo Bridge dates back to the Medieval period. The length is 34,5 meters, the width – 2,80. The bridge is constructed on the river Atcharistkali.
Another bridge on Acharistskali river is Makhuntseti bridge. The length is 24 meters.
Mitsis bridge was established on the river Chanchakheti.
Jaimala bridge was built in the 12th century. It is located at an elevation of 2790 meters above sea level.
There are two museums in Keda Municipality: Keda Historical Museum and Fridon Khalvashi Museum. Museum is named and dedicated to a Georgian poet Fridon Khalvashi (May 17, 1925-July 8, 2010).
