Gremi Fortress, located in the Kvareli municipality, sits approximately 150 kilometers away from Tbilisi. Constructed in the 16th century by Levan, King of Kakheti, it served as a vital stronghold in the Kakheti region during the Middle Ages.
In the 15th century, Gremi was the principal residence of the Kakheti Royal family. The fortress spans over 50 hectares and is situated on a site with diverse terrain. Encircled by a protective wall containing numerous significant structures, its most prominent feature is the Domed Church of Archangel, constructed in 1565. The church is adorned with frescoes and inscriptions dating back to the 16th century.
Other notable buildings within the fortress include a dwelling tower, belfry, caravanserai, Nakulbakevi, bathhouse, and the Sameba (Trinity) fortress, all dating back to the 16th century.
