Abastumani Observatory
GENAO - Georgian National Astrophysical Observatory was founded in 1932 on Mount Kanobili (Altitude 1770m), Meskheti Range on Lesser Caucasus.
Built-in the Soviet Era, from 1932 to 1978, the observatory is under the patronage of Iliauni- Ilia State University. Being distant from the air pollution and sky illumination, due to the altitude 1770 m, there are unique atmospheric conditions for observations. Natural conditions are excellent: the weather is stable, without harsh and sudden changes, mountains are covered with coniferous forest, surrounded by Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park – location is one of the best for observatories at the same altitude range.
At present theoretical and observational research is carried out in many areas of astronomy and aeronomy in Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory: Earth's atmosphere, the Sun and solar system, star clusters, solar-terrestrial relationships, binary and variable stars, extragalactic objects.
Visitors can observe the night sky through a unique telescope, converse with astronomers and familiarize themselves with the unique collections in the museum.
