Dadiani Palaces Historical Museum
The first data about the house of Dadiani dates back to 1046. Appointed as rulers of Samegrelo (Mingrelia) kingdom in reward for their military services, the family had become the most powerful feudal house in western Georgia by the 1280s. House of Dadiani was maintaining its political status and importance until the late 19th century.
The Dadiani palace in Zugdidi was transformed into a museum on May 1, 1921, by the initiative of Georgian ethnographer and geologist Akaki Chanturia. Museum exhibits fine art samples, archaeological materials from Greek and Georgian antique culture, collection of Christian icons, relics of Samegrelo princes, manuscripts from the 13th – 14th centuries, and even artifacts connected to emperor of France Napoleon Bonaparte.
Botanical Garden is another highlight near the Dadiani Palace. Garden was founded in the 19th century by the Prince of Samegrelo, David Dadiani.
