Uplistsikhe Historical-Architectural Museum-Reserve
Uplistsikhe Museum-Reserve was established in 1988. Located in Shida (Inner) Kartli, in 14 km distance eastwards from the town Gori, Uplistsikhe ancient cave town represents the oldest settlement, which is discovered on the territory of Georgia. The town was constructed on the left bank of the River Mtkvari on the southern slopes of Kvernaki mountain range, and cut in its sandstone massive.
Uplistsikhe was the temple city of the Kingdom of Kartli, an important religious, commercial and military-strategic center since the iron age, through the Antique and the Hellenistic (III-I centuries) and Late Neolithic (I-III centuries) times till the early medieval periods. As a result of its long spanning rich history, Uplistsikhe has both pre-Christian and Christian historical-architectural monuments present nowadays at the site.
