Dimitri Shevardnadze National Art Gallery of Tbilisi
Dimitri Shevardnadze National Art Gallery, also known as Tbilisi Art Gallery or Blue Gallery, is located on the centrally located street of the capital – Rustaveli avenue. Locals often refer to this building as Blue Gallery, due to its previous exterior design.
The history of the building goes back to the 19th century. It was built in 1888 by the initiative of the Russian Emperor, and it served as the Russian Military History Museum. Art gallery was founded by the initiative of Georgian painter Dimitri Shevardnadze, and opened in 1920, under the name of the National Art Gallery of Georgia. Building has a richly decorated façade in Baroque style. Two exhibition halls of the gallery have glass ceiling.
Gallery houses over 30,000 pieces of Georgian art and culture, majority of them by the 20th century Georgian painters and artists. Visitors can see the works of the prominent Georgian painters, such as Lado Gudiashvili, Niko Pirosmani, Elene Akhvlediani, Davit Kakabadze, Sergo Kobuladze, etc.
