Gergeti Mountain
One of the most astonishing views in Georgia can be experienced from the Trinity Church that stands on top of Mount Gerget, overlooking town Stepantsminda and surrounded by the high peaks of the Greater Caucasus. Mount Gergeti (2200 m) is located in 6 km from Stepantsminda under Mount Kazbegi, which is the third highest peak in Georgia, with the height of 5047 meters.
Gergeti Trinity Church was built in the 14th century. When Georgia was part of the Soviet Union, the religious service was prohibited, but now the church is active again. Through its history, during the various invasions and wars, Gergeti was used as a hideout because of its remote location.
Mount Gergeti can be easily reached by car from town Stepantsminda. Those who love trekking can reach the place on foot as well. Trek to the top of the mountain takes almost 2 hours.
