Jvaris Mama
Jvari's Mama-St. Cross Church, a captivating relic from the second half of the 5th century, seems to echo the grandeur of the church at the Lord’s tomb on Golgotha. In a historical rivalry, it vied with the Georgian churches in Jerusalem, establishing a legacy that echoes through the ages.
The present-day structure, dating back to the 16th century, stands in close proximity to Norashen and Sioni (Zion) churches. A tale of restoration unfolds in the first half of the 19th century, spurred by the heartfelt wish of Abbot Benedict, holding an episcopate of Bethlehem in Palestine.
Through the tumultuous era of the Soviet regime, the church underwent a transformation into a book warehouse. However, with the winds of change in 1983, a meticulous reconstruction of the surroundings of Jvaris Mama unfolded. Residential houses, taverns, and the erstwhile book warehouse vanished, paving the way for a renewed chapter. In 1989, the church's spiritual echoes were reawakened as it resumed its sacred functions. Dive into the rich tapestry of Jvari's Mama-St. Cross Church, where history, resilience, and spirituality converge in an enchanting narrative.
