St. George Church of Kari

Kari St. George Church of Tbilisi, in upper Kala district, is located on King Erekle II square and has long story.

Originally King Vakhtang Gorgasali built St. Archangels church on this place in 5th c, which got destroyed during the Mongols attack at the end of the 14th century. In the 17th century three stone churches were established on the ruins of the previous church, out of which only St. George Church got preserved to this day. Since the 18th c the temple has been functiOning as a court church, its name Kari (court) derived from here. Karis Eklesia was repaired in the 19th c and in 1991-1992.

The hall type church has an entrance gate in the south and in the west, lower part of the church consists of mixed layers of brick and stones, the upper part of the walls are built with brick.

In the west side of the church the two floored church tower, constructed in 1990, is located. To the north of King Erekle II Square, stands the palace of King George XII of Georgia - a two-stored building decorated with semicircular wooden balcony.

During the restoration works in 1976, archaeologists unearthed three tombs at the western wall dated back to the XIII-XIV centuries.

The temple opens its doors for lunch serving the poor and homeless every day.
