Tbilisi Upper Bethlehem church
The Upper Bethlehem Church in Kldisubani, part of the historic district of rocks in Upper Kala, Old Tbilisi, holds a distinctive position among other historical churches. Legend has it that King Vakhtang Gorgasali, the founder of Tbilisi in the 5th century, constructed the first church here, symbolically resembling the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.
Despite the city's frequent destruction (counted 28 times), the Virgin Mary Church was founded by local Armenians in the 15th century on the same spot. In the early 18th century, a new church was built. Bethlehem became a sacred place for both Armenians and Georgians, and the church's construction involved resources from both communities. During the Soviet era, liturgical ceremonies were prohibited, and the church was repurposed as a workshop. Since 1994, after renovation by the Georgian Orthodox Church, daily services have been resumed.
To reach the site, there are two recommended paths: a climb of 120 steps from Lado Asatiani Street or a drive to the Kartlis Deda monument, followed by a gentle downhill pass to the Upper Bethlehem Church. Both routes offer rewarding experiences – enchanting 18th-century streets in the district of rocks, numerous places of worship, a cozy neighborhood, and splendid panoramic views.
