Great Mtskheta Archaeological State Museum-Reserve

Archaeological finds of various periods unearthed in the Town of Mtskheta are kept at Mtskheta Archaeological Museum-Reserve. The territory of Museum-Reserve is about 30 hectares in total, and includes an archaeological and architectural collection of the world and national importance monuments.

Exceptional archaeological exhibits of different historical periods the earliest of which – the agricultural tools dated back by 4th millennium BC belonged to ancient farmers; toys for children of prehistoric times (14th -13th cc. BC.), precious metal artifacts, samples of goldsmith of the Antique Period marked with highest level of craftsmanship and the perfect samples of the Ancient epigraphy, inscriptions on the stone slabs.

Besides, visitors are able to visit ancient burial ground used for the vast period of time - from the 2th Millennium BC till the 8th-9th cc AD and the settlement remains dated back by 8th-7th cc BC.

The notable artifacts of the Archeological Museum-reserve are located in Mtskheta town and its surrounding area: Samtavro Mausoleum and Burial Ground (II millennium BC-Early Middle Ages), Samtavro Ancient Settlement ( VIII-VII c. BC); Armaztsikhe-Bagineti residence of the sovereigns of the Kingdom of Kartli ( I c. BC- VIII C.AD) and the acropolis; ArmazisKhevi, complex with the remains of the residence of the Pitiakhshies (governors) and their cemetery ( II-IV c. AD).

Majority of the most important samples of pre-Christian and Christian Georgian architecture are listed in World Cultural Heritage List of UNESCO;

Museum was moved to the recently renovated former Cinema Hall building on the central square of Mtskheta Municipality, 21 km from Tbilisi.
