Nekresi Monastery
Nekresi is a monastery located in Kakheti region, between the two settlements: town Kvareli and village Shilda. Monastery was founded in the 6th century by Abibos, one of thirteen Assyrian fathers – a group of monastic missionaries arrived in Georgia.
Nekresi complex is comprised of several structures, notably: Church of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, mortuary chapel, bishop’s palace, defensive tower, and other buildings.
Church of the Dormition is the oldest one, dated back to the 6th-7th centuries. Similar to Bolnisi Sioni, Church of the Dormition in Nekresi is basilica, and has a three-church design. Church interior has frescoes from the 16th century.
Church of the Archangel was built several centuries later, in 8th-9th c.c., in south-western part of the monastery.
Bishop’s Palace is a two storey building with a wine cellar on its ground floor. It has a defensive tower next to it, dating to the 16th century.
