Anchiskhati Basilica

Anchiskhati St. Mary's Church of the Assumption is a monument of Georgian medieval architecture 6th 18th cc, located on Shavteli Street, on the right bank of the river Mtkvari.

Anchiskhati Church is a three-aisled basilica, built of hewn stone (the original layer), and the upper parts of the walls and all the inner poles are made of brick (restoration of the 17th century).

The name Anchiskhati was given to the church in the late 17th century, when the icon of the savior was moved to Tbilisi from the Ancha Monastery, Klarjeti (now located in Turkey). The church was damaged and rebuilt several times from the 15th through the 17th century, due to wars with Persians and Turks.

At the end of 19th century the dome was added to the church, which significantly changed it. During the Soviet regime, liturgical ceremonies in Anchiskhati church were halted, and it was turned into the museum of handcrafts, later-into an art studio. The liturgical ceremonies were restored in the church in 1989.
