Sameba is the biggest functional church of Georgia and the third biggest Orthodox cathedral in the world. Located on the left bank of River Mtkvari, on Ellia Hill, in historic district of Avlabari, it is visible from every corner of Tbilisi.
The Cathedral complex consists of the main church dedicated to Holy Trinity, two main gates – Western and South, a free-standing bell-tower, two churches: Iveria Virgin Mary and Ilya Tetezbitel, a theological academy, clerical seminary, the residence of the Patriarch, a monastery, several workshops and recreational area: park, Lagidze water café, small zoo, etc. The cathedral consists of nine chapels (Archangels, John the Baptist, Saint Nino, Saint George, Saint Nicholas, the Twelve Apostles, and All Saints).

The construction of Tsminda Sameba - Holy Trinity Church took 7 years and finished in 2004. It was built to commemorate 1,500 years of autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church and 2,000 years from the birth of Jesus. The construction of the church was proclaimed as a “symbol of the Georgian national and spiritual revival" and was sponsored mostly by anonymous donations. Its height goes up to 87 meters with 137-meter diameter including vestibule gallery. The dome and 2.5 tone cross of the cathedral are gilded. The Sacred Church Objects are kept in this church, amongst the unique handwritten bible of 1984-2004. Architect Archil Mindiashvili , the murals and mosaic by Amiran Goglidze.
