Pickup from Tbilisi at 9:00 AM. Today we drive north towards Stepantsminda (former Kazbegi) via Georgian military highway. Pass by Jinvali reservoir and visit Ananuri castle. Optional stop for a lunch in local restaurant. Continue driving north by Jvari Pass (2,379 m) – stop at the viewpoint to enjoy Gudauri surroundings. Finally, we arrive at Stepantminda – administrative center and largest settlements in the area that many climbers and hikers use as their basecamp.
Before sunset, we will take a short warm-up hike to iconic Gergeti Trinity Church located right above Stepantsminda on top of the hill, overlooking Mt. Kazbegi.
Dinner and overnight in Stepantsminda.
Trekking: 6 km, ascent 840 m, descent 40 m.
Start early morning at 8:00, we drive up to the trail-head near Gergeti Trinity Church and start hiking towards Sabertse pass (3000 m. asl). Along the way we pass by several “false passes” and memorials dedicated to climbers who perished on the mountain. Once we reach Sabertse pass, we will be rewarded with a great proximity view of the peak, Gergeti glacier, and small mountain hut on a small meadow in front.
The hut is called “Atihut” – which is newly built and for time being the only relatively comfortable accommodation on the way to the summit,
Overnight in Altihut.
Trekking A: 3.5 km, ascent 650 m
Trekking B (training part): 6 km, ascent 400 m, descent 400 m.
On that day you will be making your way up to the famous Bethlemi Hut (aka Meteo station) to spend one extra day for acclimatization and training before summiting Mt/ Kazbegi. As a part of acclimatization, we take an additional 3 hours hike up to 4000 m above sea level, learn about various safety and mountaineering techniques.
Overnight in tents.
Total distance: 12 km, ascent 1335 m, descent 1335 m.
Weather permitting, after midnight at 01:30 AM we begin the journey to the summit. 12 km roundtrip takes approximately 9 hours. A narrow path will lead you to the north-west direction to approach the glacier from its south-western side, the beginning of the hardest and most demanding part of the ascent that turns into climbing towards its end. After some rewarding break at the top – make your way back to the Meteo station for rest.
Overnight in tents.
Use this day as a reserve in case of bad weather and summit was not reachable on scheduled time.
Overnight in tents.
Return back to Stepantminda, we slowly descend (5-6 hours journey) to Gergeti Trinity Church, where we will be picked up by 4x4 WD vehicles to be transferred to Stepantsminda for a well-deserved rest and yes - hot shower!
Transfer back to Tbilisi. Drop off to the hotel.
We wish you a wonderful evening and hope to see you coming back to Caucasus Mountains soon!
