Today we combine visiting two towns and two monasteries: one is post-Soviet industrial city Rustavi and another - a medieval town Sighnaghi. Between these places, there are two unique medieval monasteries: first, visit men's monastery David Gareja Lavra (6-16th cc), which is hidden in a sand-stone caves in the middle of abandoned semi-desert area; and afterwards, before reaching beautiful town Sighnaghi, we pay a visit to a nunnery in Bodbe (since 4th c).
Have a wonderful day ahead!
08:00 pick-up from Tbilisi hotel.
Drive to David Gareji desert through Rustavi city. This is the shortest and most attractive way to reach Lavra monastery. Make a short stop in Rustavi industrial zone and turn to the old military road in semi desert through an abundance of sandstone colors, and semi-desert wildlife. In lavra we can see the picturesque landscape and rock carved-out water channels near the entrance of the monks’ residence.
Continue the way to Kakheti, East Georgia passing Sagarejo. Stop at Bodbe Monastery - this nunnery is one of the major pilgrimage sites in Georgia, due to its association with St. Nino, the 4th century female evangelist of Georgians, whose shrine is there.
Head to town Signagi (only 2 km from Bodbe Monastery) - an old trading town is located on the hills and is surrounded by medieval wall with 23 watchtowers. Cobbled streets and terracotta tile-roofed houses with colorful carved balconies and panoramic views of the Alazani Valley add the place a very charming character.
In the evening return back to Tbilisi.
