Itinerary

Day to day

Morning pick-up from Tbilisi. We start our journey by visiting Gori – a small town located at the heart of the Kartli region. Here, we are interested in two major attractions: The house-museum of the Soviet leader J. Stalin in the center of Gori who was born here, and the ancient cave town of Uplistsikhe dating back to 1st millennium BC, located in 15 km from the town. The town is argued to be one of the oldest settlements in the region. Uplistsikhe has rock-hewn streets and squares, halls, secret tunnels, remains of ancient churches and a museum building, where valuable items excavated in Uplistsikhe are presented.
Have lunch en-route and head towards Borjomi – a resort-town famous for its mineral sparkling waters. Here you can taste Borjomi mineral sparkling water and walk through the Borjomi-Kharagauli national park – one of the largest protected areas in Europe, which covers 5300 sq. km.
Evening departure from Borjomi and arrival in Akhaltsikhe town.
Dinner and overnight in Akhaltsikhe.

After breakfast, start sightseeing Akhaltsikhe. First, visit Rabati. Rabati is a medieval complex that integrates a castle, fortification, museum, a synagogue, church, and other different interesting attractions. Its museum presents the cultural heritage of Javakheti region and various types of artifacts collected from this historical province: old manuscripts, archaeological exhibits, ethnographic material, collection of old carpets, rugs, and etc. Rabati also includes a castle, 18th c.
After sightseeing Rabati continue the trip and drive to the south part of the country along the Mtkvari river gorge where you can enjoy hilly landscapes and several old fortresses. Make a short stop by the Khertvisi fortress.
Continue to Vardzia – a cave monastic complex dating back to the 12th-13th cc. Vardzia is carved in the slopes of the Erusheti Mountains, stretched along the 500 meters on a cliff and consists of 19 different tiers. Georgian Queen Tamar is credited for establishing this monastery during her reign in the 12th c. Nowadays monks still live in caves.
Have hot trout barbeque and picnic lunch near the site.
